Equally renowned for both his charming demeanor and his culinary expertise, Irish chef and media personality Donal Skehan has carved-out a unique and distinctive place in the global food industry.
From humble beginnings as one of Ireland’s first food bloggers to international fame, the 38-year-old continues to balance accessibility and authenticity within the ever-changing dynamics of food trends.
With a focus on convenience and relatability, Skehan emphasizes the importance of creating recipes that resonate with audiences and address the everyday challenge of what to serve for supper.
“It comes down to the purpose behind your lifestyle and what you are doing,” he shares over the phone from his home in Dublin. “Early on, I learned that there is no point in my writing and creating recipes – as exciting as they might be – if people aren’t going to actually make them and enjoy them.”
His latest cookbook, Home Kitchen – and the accompanying TV series, Home Cook – serve-up easy-to-follow, practical instructions for meal prepping. The projects were conceived following his return to Ireland after living and working for several years in Los Angeles, California.
The homecoming reconnected Skehan with Irish traditions, family, and the incredible local produce that the country has to offer.
“Coming home puts everything in perspective. Ireland’s incredible meats, dairy, and seafood reminds me of what makes our cuisine so special.”
The new cookbook celebrates the staples of daily Irish life, from hearty Sunday dinners to quick weeknight meals, blending nostalgia with practicality – a testament to the evolution of Eire’s culinary culture over the past decade.
“When I started, food writing was the domain of chefs and critics. Now, anyone with a story and passion can share their voice.’
Today, Ireland boasts a world-class array of Michelin-star restaurants, chefs, and food producers championing local and seasonal ingredients. However, Shehan believes there is still room for growth, particularly when it comes to supporting small restaurants and businesses. As such, he advocates for a change in public policies to encourage innovation and sustain the vibrancy of Ireland’s food scene.
“Support is there for really young food producers. The only thing that we are missing is a little more leniency on the tax front for our smaller restaurants and businesses to flourish.”
One of Skehan’s exciting new ventures is Wind Shore Goods, a creative lifestyle brand that he says has helped him to “scratch a long-held creative itch.” Rooted in his artistic heritage – his grandparents were sculptors – the brand blends aesthetics with functionality. Windshore Goods offers thoughtfully-designed homeware items that elevate daily rituals, such as elegant coffee cups, artisanal vases, and finer food items. The project marks a full-circle moment for the celebrity chef, who previously published a magazine showcasing Irish artisans.
“It really is a platform for celebrating craftsmanship and products with purpose…”
Though still in its early stages, Skehan plans to expand the range while collaborating with other artisans. The brand reflects his desire to root his life in meaningful connections and thoughtful choices, a sentiment shaped by the changing tides of his own family life and the need to find balance and stability.
“One of the big things for us, particularly as a family who has moved around a lot and are now approaching an era of setting down roots, is that we want every item that comes into the house to have something of a purpose and that also tells a story.”
The brand’s debut also includes a curated collection of high-quality ingredients, such as olive oil pressed on the first day of harvest, encapsulating an ethos for mindful living.
“First and foremost, tt showcases our fantastic Irish artisans. It also allows me to have a bit of playfulness with finding and creating something purposeful with a curated collection of some of my favorite ingredients, putting them at the forefront.”
As if launching a lifestyle brand wasn’t enough, Skehan is also working on a new cookbook and TV show slated for release in 2025. While details remain under wraps, he hinted that the projects would continue his tradition of combining simple, delicious recipes with heartfelt, and typically Irish, storytelling. Additionally, he plans to return to the United States for promotional events.
As a husband and busy father of two young boys, Skehan notes the challenges of balancing a demanding career with family life.
“It is certainly something I struggle with. I sometimes get it right and sometimes I am out of kilter.”
To stay grounded, he prioritizes activities that “fill his cup” – including meditation, cooking for pleasure, and long walks along Ireland’s cliffs with his dog. These rituals help him recalibrate when the scales tip too heavily toward work.
Achieving a proper work/ life balance is characteristic of the many practical challenges facing busy families and individuals today. His transparency reflects the self-care and mindfulness that speaks directly to viewers looking for equilibrium in carrying out everyday essentials like food prep.
“We have a young family with two cute and crazy boys, and we need answers and quick fixes just like anyone else…”
For those aspiring to enter the culinary world, Skehan’s advice is clear: find your platform and be consistent. He credits his early success to his food blog, which allowed him to share his voice and showcase his photography – a skill he continues to use in his many projects. He advocates using various social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram that offer similar opportunities for aspiring culinary creators.
“It is easier than ever to be visible. Make use of social platforms and understand that good visuals are very important. I still photograph all my own food for my cookbooks and beyond. Having the ability to showcase your work is key.”
As he embarks on another ambitious year, Skehan hopes that his projects continue to inspire others – both abroad and in his own home.
“I am always trying to bring my vision back to solving the endless question of “What’s for dinner tonight?”
