Simple, sweet and scrumptious, Apple Crumble is the go-to, easy-to-make comfort dessert on the Emerald Isle.

Ingredients

1 and 1/4 cups of all-purpose/plain flour (225g / 6oz)
1/2 cup of oatmeal/porridge oats (50g / 2oz)
1 stick of butter (85g / 3oz) – preferably soft
1/2 cup of brown sugar (85-110g / 3-4oz)
3 to 4 Granny Smith apples (or 2 large cooking apples) peeled and sliced
1/4 cup of sugar to sweeten apples

Instructions

Pre-heat the oven to 375F/180C. Sift the flour into a large bowl. Rub the flour and the butter together with your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Mix in the brown sugar and oats. Set the crumble aside to prepare the apples. Grease a 1.5 quart oven-proof dish. Peel and slice the apples. Layer the fruit and sugar in the base of the dish. Spread the crumble mix over the top. Cook in a 375F / 180C oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool slightly before serving. Serve with cream, hot custard or ice cream.
